This story is about an expedition in the Iskar Gorge. The mission. To find the hidden cave entrances of the ancient Shishman Fortress. Legend says a lost Bulgarian crown is hidden there. We didn't find gold, but we found something better. The day started in Lyutibrod. We hiked an old Roman road through a cliff pass called "The Average Stone". Then came the real fun. Rock climbing and rappelling down sheer cliffs to reach secret cave openings. My knees were shaking, but the view was insane. We finally made it to one of the caves. Inside, we did what cavers do: signed the expedition notebook. This time, with season's greetings and holiday wishes for anyone who finds it next. From Roman roads to a medieval fortress, then down to the peaceful Cherepish Monastery – this trip was a history lesson you can climb on.
