Urban river swimming in Bern, Switzerland. The video shows a full uncut one-shot round including walking up the river "Aare" starting at the Marzili lido until the "Schönausteg" footbridge from where some brave people jump into the river, but then entering the river "normally" below and swiming down (or let floating down, since the river flows quite fastly) and then leaving the river through the new "channel" which is one of many options to leave the river and was created specifically for this task upon the renovation of the historic "Buber" part (men only area in the past) of the Marzili lido. In fact you can leave the river everywhere you see a red handrail. Also you of course can enter at various different locations, also at much shorter distance to the Marzili lido. The "Schönausteg" footbrige is just one of them at a bit longer distance. If you want to have an even longer swim then walk all way up until the "Eichholz" campsite which is about double the distance compared to the "Schönausteg" footbridge, and you can enter slowly without stairs at a small beach. 00:00 Starting at Marzili lido 00:13 Checking temperatures on the display (bath/air/river) 01:10 Walking up the river 10:02 Arriving at the "Schönau" footbridge and enjoying the view 11:08 Again leaving the bridge 11:47 Again checking temperatures (not readable in the video) 11:50 In this "ice-bath" some people pre-cool themselves 11:52 Walking down the stairs to the river 12:54 Entering the river and floating/swimming downwards 20:01 Leaving the river through the "channel" 21:42 Going to the little bridge and having a view over the Marzili lido Precondition: You must be able to swim! Even when you use an inflatable support. Every year about 4 - 6 people die in the river! Which however also includes other reasons than drowning like heart attack which also might have happened elsewhere. Also, take care of your legs upon leaving the river since there are stones underneath you can't see and which can hurt your legs at the shallow shore area. The best is to grab the red handrail (if you use one of these to leave the river) in absolutely flat position and then let the legs swing over in direction of the river's streaming and only then take them to your body building a package form. Some people also leave the river with the legs ahead and then carefully make contact with the stones below and then stand up. The best observe the local people how they do it. The "channel" exit is less prone to hurt your legs since it has a constant depth, but right at the entrance of the channel there's a shallow area where you nevertheless can bump your legs. So make sure to remain in as flat position as possible. Swiming in the town's surrounding river "Aare" is one of the most popular pasttimes in Bern in summer. Some hardened people also do it in the winter! After a swim in the Aare you always feel better than before! Bern ist the capital of Switzerland (no, it's not Zürich!) and most definitely the most peacful city in the world. And probably no other city in Switzerland offers an as mindblowing view of the Swiss Alps. Go to the "Bundesterrasse" (the public place in front of the "Bundeshaus", the house and seat of the Swiss government and parliament) on a clear day and convice yourself! You'll be completely blown away! The "Bundeshaus" (seat of the Swiss government and parliament) by the way is the big buildig with the green domes you can see while swimming in the "Aare" river in direction of the river's streaming on the left, the lower symmetrical one with flat roof belongs to the Bundeshaus (offices, administration) and the bigger cuboid building with brown roof on the right is the "Bellvue Palace", the probably most classy hotel in the city of Bern offering a mindblowing view over the river Aare and the Swiss Alps. Note that the day of recording was a normal and rather cloudy working day at about 4pm, so not that many people. At weekend when the weather is perfect and the Aare is warm (18 degrees celsius for most is acceptable or good, 20 is very good, everything above exceptional) there are way more people! I may do another video on a warm weekend too in the future to show you the enormous crowd and the river Aare literally filled up with people and boats! P.S: Due to the proximity of the microphone my breathing appears quite loud as if I would be dangerously out of breath, but in fact I was pretty relaxed.
