More than 30 years after it was first lighted, Denver’s “living room” is feeling comfortable again. And no one may be more pleased than the original lighting designer. The mile-long 16th Street Mall is lined with hundreds of restaurants, shopping, movie theaters and other attractions. Designed by architect I.M. Pei, the mall consists of red, white and gray granite in a repeating pattern that, seen from above, resembles the skin of a diamondback rattlesnake. Lighting designer Howard Brandston, who was not originally part of Pei’s team but added at the request of the city, envisioned the pedestrian promenade as Denver’s living room when he developed the lighting concept in 1982. “A street is not for the passage of motor cars,” but for people and pedestrians, he says. “The lighting must respond to the way walking humans see and move. Psychological comfort and satisfaction, along with physical safety, must be achieved.” READ MORE: https://www.ies.org/lda-magazine/feat... ABOUT THE ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING SOCIETY (IES) In 1906 the IES was founded with the purpose of bringing together those with lighting knowledge to develop standards, promote research, and develop educational materials to advance the art, science, and practice of lighting design and engineering. The strength of the IES is its diversified membership, including engineers, architects, designers, educators, students, contractors, distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers and scientists in 64 countries. The IES is a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional society writing the American National Standards (ANSI) for lighting. https://www.ies.org
