To help shape the future of wildlife veterinary care in Laos, Free the Bears, Elephant Conservation Centre, the Laos Conservation Trust for Wildlife, and the National University of Laos have partnered to deliver a dedicated Wildlife and Conservation Medicine module for veterinary students. Before this program began, students of veterinary science in Laos were mostly trained in domestic animal care, but Laos is home to many extraordinary and threatened wildlife species in need. Through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience at real sanctuaries, students gain practical skills in wildlife handling, husbandry, diagnostics and conservation-focused veterinary care. They work alongside experienced vets from around the world, treating rescued wild animals and understanding the realities of conservation on the ground. Hear from Jenny, a former module participant now a Junior Veterinarian with Free the Bears, on what she learned. Her journey reflects why this program matters, ensuring wildlife in Laos have skilled wildlife vets on the ground, ready to protect them now and into the future.
