A common question I get asked is 'what guitar can I use for good Kurt Cobain tone?'. A lot of the time my answer is a Jaguar or a Mustang modded to Kurt's specs, or if you are fortunate enough to afford one, a signature Kurt Cobain Mustang or Jaguar. However, for many this isn't an option due to either costs or inability to make the necessary mods. So my most cost effective answer would have to be the Fender Duo-Sonic in HS configuration. This guitar is nirvana! It's cheap compared to the other KC models and has everything you need: a humbucker, a short scale and a fixed bridge with solid tuners for tuning stability! In addition you can split the humbucker via a push-pull tone pot and the neck pickup sounds great in it's own right! The 3 way toggle switch simplifies the previous mustang 3 way slider switch scheme, and is out of the way so it is harder to accidentally toggle. Another great point for me personally is the lightweight design of the guitar, as back injury means I cannot handle weighty guitars like Jaguars for extended periods of time. This guitar is amazing, and requires no modification out of the box for great Nirvana tones! Try one out! Why not a HSS strat you ask? I simply prefer shortscale guitars, and the sound you can get from throwing .11 gauge strings on them (yes the strings do make a difference in sound). But that's just my personal preference, a HSS strat will definitely work, Kurt used them himself! Also I prefer hardtail bridges on everything except Jaguars and Jazzmasters.
