This plant is closely related to the corpse flower and they share a few characteristics too. The plant is harvested from corms, tubers and petioles, and all of these parts can be eaten and are full of minerals. The plant not only looks odd but also has some equally odd names including, stinking snakeskin, voodoo lily and white spot giant arum. It’s eaten as a vegetable or mashed and mixed with rice and salt and is often the base for curries and even fried as chips! 13 - Welwitschia Mirabilis When it comes to looks, this is not the kind of flower that you’re going to put in a floral arrangement and display in your living room, but what it lacks in beauty it makes up for in hardiness! This plant has some rather unique qualities, one being that it only has 2 leaves that almost don’t stop growing, eventually resembling the unkempt beard of a giant. The plant doesn’t grow too much in height, but the stem thickens and can span across 8-meters or 26-feet. These plants can live forever, anything from 400-years to 1500 years and they can survive for 5-years without seeing a drop of rain. They are also said to taste quite good, and it’s been dubbed “Onyanga” meaning onion of the desert. 12 - Lithops Saying this plant's name to someone who is unfamiliar with the species, might mean they think you have a lisp, but don’t mind them, because the lithops plant is just too adorable! It has a unique shape that is formed when the two separate leaves merge together. The leaves grow in the rainy season and they look like little rocks protecting their flower. The leaves are brown or grey and the flowers can be pink, white, grey, yellow or purple. You find lithops mainly in South Africa and they can reach a ripe old age of 50! 11 - Rafflesia arnoldii It holds the title of the world’s largest flower, this is Rafflesia arnoldii. It’s a rare and exotic plant that requires you to go on a bit of a mission to find. They are not available at your local florist and you certainly couldn’t plant one in your garden; you would need to head to Indonesia. Even then, the chances of finding one are slim. The flower is only open for a few days each year and the buds take months to develop, so you might walk right past one without realizing it. In total, it takes 9-months for this plant to bloom. They can grow up to 3.3-feet in diameter or 1 meter and can weigh up to 20-pounds or 9 kg. When in bloom, the odor of this plant is horrific and it’s because of this awful stench that the plant is also called the corpse flower. 10 - Bear's-Head Tooth Mushroom In North America, you’ll find this attractive albeit bizarre-looking fungus called bear’s head tooth mushroom.
