Sruti Parampara is a traditional method of call-and-response chanting to learn and memorize Sanskrit texts and knowledge systems. . Here is a recording of Dr. M.A. Jayashree of Mysore, India leading student Kimberly (Kiki) Flynn in the entire Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These tracks were recorded in Bangalore, India in 2008. Each chapter begins with a 7 minute invocation. Initially the sutra is broken down and chanted word by word, or a few words at a time, and then responded to, until the entire sutra is chanted. Following this, it is repeated three times in full by the teacher and student. Each track is approximately an hour long, and following this above method, is a tried-and-true system for memorizing the complete text f nearly 200 sutras. In this way, without books or simultaneous reading, the entire text is learned. The student is learning Sanskrit recitation beyond their understanding of the text or knowledge of the total words. This exposure is akin to how as infants, we are exposed to our native languages, or what is known as the mother tongue, and move from lack of understanding, to mimicking and repetition and finally to full understanding. Sruti Parampara taps into a natural learning model of our development and eventually culminates in a solid and fundamental understanding of the complete text and an ability to discourse and apply its meaning. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is an essential guide and insight tool for yoga seekers as well as those those who wish to know their own mind and explore the meaning of consciousness as well as uncover freedom from suffering. It awakens a longing for knowledge, devotion, and adherence to ethical considerations. One feature of The Yoga Sutras is an 8-limbed path, of which the 3rd limb is asana. Ashtanga means eight limbs. This text and the system it shares is known as Ashtanga Yoga, Patanjali Yoga, Classical Yoga or The Yoga Sutra. I began my studies with Dr. Jayashree nearly 30 years ago over many months long visits nearly yearly. I learned a great deal of chanting, yoga and philosophical insights as well as cultural knowledge. I continue to study with her. Kiki has studied yoga since 1982 and travelled to Mysore since 1995 to study Ashtanga Yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois as well as Sanskrit traditions with Dr. Jayashree and Professor Narasimha with whom she continues to study today. Kiki has taught Ashtanga Yoga, Yoga Sutras, and wellness worldwide and teaches Sutra study in zoom classes.
