Richard writes, "The title of 'splinter', as a verb, indicates a complex and chaotic kind of fracture, as when a tree bends and breaks in a storm, and the music indeed unfolds with this kind of character, sometimes consisting of a scatter of fragmented sounds, and at others remaining still but with changing tensions beneath its surface. As a noun, a splinter denotes a tiny shard of something much larger, and in fact this composition is derived from the solo part of 'elsewhen' for double bass and ensemble, which itself forms part of the conglomerate composition PSYCHE. 'elsewhen' is commissioned by Suzanne Davies and Richard Dunn in memory and honour of the remarkable musicologist Richard Toop. 'splinter' itself is dedicated to Kathryn Schulmeister.
