Also dubbed "Gibraltar of the Danube", Petrovaradin fortress (in Serbian: Petrovaradinska tvrđava or Petrovaradinska tvrdjava) is located on the right bank of the Danube, facing the city of Novi Sad. The place dates back in the Stone age and Paleolithic, year 3000 before Christ. Over the centuries, Petrovaradin was under different influences: Celtic tribes, Romans, Slavic tribes, Hungarians, Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians, and later the communists until 1989. The Petrovaradin fortress was of upmost importance back in the 16th century when it was consolidated by the Hungarians in order to face the Turkish invasions that were pretty frequent at that time. In 1687 the fortress was eventually captured by the Habsburgs, after 150 years of Turkish domination. The last military role of the fortress as a defense establishment was during the 1848 Revolution when Hungarians obtained the Independence after strenuous fights with Austrians. It is the moment when Novi Sad was also almost entirely destroyed during the conflict. Later on, Petrovaradinska tvrđava served mostly as a storage facility and after the First World War it became part of Yugoslavia. One of the main attractions and landmarks of the location is the Clock tower that was used by the fishermen to guide while sailing on the Danube. Under the Petrovaradin fortress, there is a 16 kilometers long network of uncollapsed tunnels that hopefully I am going to show to you on another video.
