Tailor-made Mesh Plug Herniorrhaphy : Research Impact [by Mahidol]

Hernia is a disorder in which the intestines pushed to the outside area of the stomach through the vulnerable parts of the abdominal wall due to the abnormality since birth. The degeneration of abdominal walls caused by aging or creating high pressures in the stomach by lifting heavy objects or by not being cautious enough after the abdominal surgery took place. The position of the intestine that could go can be many places such as thigh, navel, abdominal walls and surgery scar. Hernia is found most in men. However, women and children are also possible to have this symptom. Hernia patients could be healed by performing a surgery operation to dense the gap caused by the physical abnormality and to strengthen the abdominal wall. Therefore, Department of surgery, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital has conducted a research and inventing “Tailor-made Mesh Plug Herniorrhaphy” which is a mesh or synthetic material in a mesh form which could be hand-made tailored for treating Hernia in order to strengthen the front abdominal wall and reducing the chance of repeating the disorder. This research was approved by committees of morality research in Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital and was published in Asian Journal of Surgery.
