Wide of a cyclist turning around from the flooded embankment road STORYLINE: Hungary's Danube river flooded the embankment roads of the country's capital on Thursday. Snow melt due to mild weather in the Danube's basin led to an increase in water flow in the river and its tributaries. Hungary's General Directorate of Water Management predicted that the water level will rise slightly higher on Thursday, to reach a peak of around 700 centimetres (23 feet) in Budapest. Accurate forecasting of the Danube tidal surge has also been significantly hampered by the heavy rainfall in recent days. Sandor Esztergalyos, a tourist from the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen, has traveled to Budapest to show the flooding Danube to his son. Almost 1200 kilometers (745 miles) of flood protection alert has been declared in Hungary. While some of the smaller rivers in the western side of the country started to return to their beds, water level of the Danube is predicted to fall only slowly. University student and Budapest resident Marta Mork has walked around the flooded embankment roads of her city, commenting that her "favourite places are all flooded now". It is calculated that the water level may go below the Budapest’s embankment roads on December 30, but on the southern stretch of the Danube, the peak is still some way off. In southern Hungary, the river is forecast to peak on the last day of the year at 812 centimeters (26,6 feet). Rivers surges have causing localized flooding in other parts of Europe, with firefighters and volunteers working to reinforce dykes against rising floodwaters in northern and eastern Germany, while several flood plains went underwater in the eastern Netherlands where temporary dykes were being built with large sandbags to protect the country.
