Presented by author Gordon D. Webster and featuring the music of popular Scots folk band Reely Jiggered, Part 2 of this documentary continues the story of the line frequently voted the ‘Top Railway Journey in the World’. With archive and present-day footage, we pick up the History of the West Highland Line in the 1980s, as steam trains make a sensational return to this famous route. Locomotive-hauled service trains became a thing of the past, as the WHL joined the privatised British Rail system of the 1990s. The popular Fort William-London Euston sleeper - known as the ‘Deerstalker’ - came a whisker away from being withdrawn, while freight on the line was hit a devastating blow in the new Millennium with changing market conditions. Steam trains continued to reign supreme on the Fort William-Mallaig line, as passenger numbers increased tenfold with the filming of the Harry Potter movie series. This in turn gave the main line to Fort William a massive boost into the phenomenally popular attraction it is today. With archive and present-day footage, plus maps and location descriptions. Produced, edited and directed by Gordon D. Webster. Gordon graduated with a BA Hons degree in Journalism at Glasgow Caledonian University in 2009 and is a published author of several railway books. He appeared in the second series of the STV series ‘Inside Central Station’ to discuss the impact of the Beeching Cuts on Glasgow’s railways.
