Why do many artists struggle in the middle of their careers? This conversation explores the difficult mid-career stage in visual art. Artists are no longer emerging, yet they have not fully reached the established market. Prices rise, collectors shift, and many artists question whether they can sustain their practice. We discuss art market realities, artistic doubt, and the decision to keep making work despite uncertainty. A candid conversation about persistence and the realities of building a life in art. -- Elwah Gonzales is a full-time interdisciplinary self- taught artist based in Bacolod City, Philippines with a background in theater improvisation. Elwah has staged three (3) solo exhibits and has participated in group shows in the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. Elwah’s works experiment with organic forms thatstrive to push the boundaries of the interpretation of two-dimensional spaces. The themes of introspection, growth, longing, and uncertainty toward unknown futures can be seen in her depiction of plants and people with markedly long necks, and in her use of found objects. She co-founded the artist-run space and boutique House of Frida and is also an active member of a theater improvisation group called Bacolod Improv Group (B.I.G.) in the Philippines. Elwah is an alum and a research fellow of the 2023 Linangan Art Residency in Alfonso, Cavite, Philippines. In 2024, she was selected for an artist exchange residency by the Overlab Independent Curator Group in Gwangju, South Korea.
