Alum Cave Trail is one of the most popular and scenic hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This moderate-to-strenuous trail stretches 5 miles round trip to Alum Cave Bluffs or 11 miles round trip to the summit of Mount LeConte (6,593 ft), the third-highest peak in the park. Highlights of the Trail: Arch Rock (1.5 miles in) – A unique rock formation with stone steps carved through it, making for a fun and picturesque climb. Inspiration Point (2 miles in) – A breathtaking overlook with views of Little Duck Hawk Ridge and the surrounding Smokies. Alum Cave Bluffs (2.3 miles in) – A massive concave rock shelter with overhanging cliffs, offering shade and cool mist, especially after rain. Mount LeConte (5.5 miles in, optional) – For those continuing, the summit features LeConte Lodge, incredible panoramic views, and the reward of conquering one of the highest peaks in the eastern U.S. What to Expect: Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous, with a steady incline and some steep sections. Time Needed: 3–4 hours to Alum Cave Bluffs; 6–8 hours round trip to Mount LeConte. Best Time to Hike: Spring through fall, but winter offers stunning frozen formations.
