Assam’s Moidams, also known as the ‘Pyramids of India,’ have been inscribed as the 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Site, during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee at New Delhi. This historic recognition, makes Moidams the 1st cultural site (from the cultural heritage category) and the 3rd overall site from the North East to be inscribed on the World Heritage list. The two others are Kaziranga and Manas which were inscribed under the Natural Heritage category in 1985. India now stands at the 6th position globally for the most number of World Heritage Properties. Assam’s Moidams The Moidams at Charaideo, are a series of grand, earthen mounds that serve as the burial sites for the Ahom royalty. These structures date back to the 13th century and showcase the intricate funerary practices and cosmological beliefs of the Tai-Ahom people.
