It is a multifunctional accessory to the gastrointestinal tract and performs such duties as detoxification, protein synthesis, biochemical production and nutrient storage. The stomach is part of the digestion system and essential for the nutrient supply to the body. Its acidic gastric juice acts as a barrier to bacteria which could otherwise infiltrate the intestines and other abdominal organs. Lymph nodes are small, oval shaped structures found throughout the body. Lymph nodes contain white blood cells that filter lymph to fight infections. In the abdomen they tend to cluster around major arteries supplying abdominal viscera. In the full version of this tutorial we will focus on nodes near the stomach and liver. These lymph nodes surround: the cardia of the stomach, the left gastric artery, the pyloric arteries, the right and left gastroomental arteries, the splenic artery, the pancreaticoduodenal artery, the proper hepatic artery and the celiac trunk. we will end with the the return of filtered lymph to peripheral circulation in the thorax.
