Justice Minister Helen McEntee is one of the most well-known and heavily scrutinised politicians in Ireland. Last Thursday, she sat down for an exclusive interview with the Indo Daily to discuss a wide range of pressing issues, including domestic violence, immigration and the growing number of threats being made to female politicians. Ms McEntee revealed that one of the defining moments of her time as minister involved the case of a pregnant woman whose partner “boiled sugar and water and poured it over her”. She says the memory of this case will never leave her. Speaking to Ellen Coyne, Ms McEntee detailed the work of Cuan, a dedicated agency tasked with increasing refuge spaces for those seeking to escape an abusive home life. The Fine Gael minister addressed the challenges arising from the Dublin city riots and the Coolock protests. She also spoke about dealing with the bomb threat that saw her family evacuated from their home.
