62 years ago, the small Swiss village of Dürrenäsch became the scene of a devastating tragedy. On September 4, 1963, Swissair Flight 306 lost control and crashed into a field at the edge of the village, only minutes after departing Zurich on its way to Geneva and Rome. The Sud Aviation Caravelle had covered little more than 35 kilometers of its journey. What remained was a smoldering crater, a nation in shock — and at the time, the worst aviation accident in Swiss history. Investigators were confronted with an almost impossible task. The aircraft had been torn to pieces. Yet the answers would not be found at the crash site itself. Instead, alarming evidence began to emerge at the airport from which flight 306 departed. In our third documentary, we take you back to that fateful morning when all 80 people on board tragically lost their lives — back to a time when an entire country was plunged into mourning and disbelief. What happened on board Swissair Flight 306 on that early autumn morning? Why did the pilots lose control of a new jet only minutes after takeoff? Was it a technical malfunction? Did the weather play a decisive role? Or was the accident rooted in long-forgotten practices of the early jet age? In this documentary, we reconstruct the final minutes of Swissair Flight 306, examine the investigation that followed, and explore the far-reaching consequences for aviation safety. More than sixty years have passed since this tragedy edged itself into the history of aviation. But time does not diminish the loss. We remember the 80 souls who perished on board, and the families and communities forever changed by their absence.
