For Sherwood, astrophysics has been a life-long passion. A fascination with the universe has led him thus far to work on simulations of accretion disks around black holes, observations of super-massive black hole jets, and even ultrafast atomic physics and carbon nanotubes en route to a bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Virginia. He is presently a DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellow and a graduate student in physics at Caltech, where he studies supernova explosion mechanisms using computer simulations. Sherwood also has a drive to share the perspective gained from the current understanding of the universe, and has given popular talks at schools to encourage thinking outside the sphere of our Earth. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxYouth@Caltech was held on January 19, 2013, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA.
