The creative team behind 'Frankenstein' dives deep into Jacob Elordi’s stunning transformation, and how the haunting first encounter between Elizabeth and the creature was brought to life. Go behind the scenes of the new film with Mia Goth (Elizabeth), Guillermo Del Toro, composer Alexandre Desplat, cinematographer Dan Lausten, set designer Tamara Deverell, makeup artist Mike Hill, and costume designer Kate Hawley. Guillermo Del Toro shares some of his inspirations for the scene, like the fairytale illustrations of Arthur Rackham, while Makeup Artist Mike Hill reveals the subtle homages to older Frankenstein films in his unique design for the creature–plus, the shocking amount of time devoted to Jacob’s makeup each day, and the way it ultimately informed his performance. Mia Goth recalls the genuine surprise she brought to her performance (it was her first time seeing Jacob as the creature), while Cinematographer Dan Lausten shows how tricks like altering the frame rate work to enhance it. Costume Designer Kate Hawley explains how she tried to capture the iridescence of an insect in Elizabeth’s dress for this scene, at Guillermo’s request, and Alexandre Desplat describes crafting the perfect score for such a delicate moment, which he says is like a ballet. Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ is available now on Netflix.
