Track 9 from their self-titled debut album released in 1978 copyright Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded at Basing St. Studios in London where the band was formed. One of the best debut albums by any band exploded on the charts due to Mark Knopfler’s outstanding ability as a guitarist and songwriter. The technique and emotion in his unique style of playing make him one of the best to ever pick up the instrument. He used his 1938 National “style O” steel resonator guitar on “Water of Love” and “Wild West End.” The single “Sultans of Swing” was a worldwide hit, reaching No. 8 in the U.K. and No. 4 on Billboard. The album received excellent reviews and reached the Top 20 in ten countries, including No. 2 on Billboard. It was certified 2X Platinum in Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. and 4X Platinum in Canada. The band went on to sell more than 100 million albums, won four Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Written by Mark Knopfler and produced by Muff Winwood. Featuring: Mark Knopfler – Lead vocals, lead & rhythm guitars David Knopfler – Rhythm guitars & background vocals John Illsley – Bass & background vocals Pick Withers – Drums Red sun, you goin' down way over dirty town Starlings, they are sweepin' around in crazy shoals Yes, and a girl is there high-heelin' across the square The wind, it blows around in her hair and the flags upon the poles Waitin' in the crowd to cross at the light, she looks around to find a face she can like Uh-huh Church bell clingin' on just tryin' to get a crowd for Evensong Nobody cares to depend upon the chimes it plays They're all in the station prayin' for trains, the congregation late again It's gettin' darker all the time these flagpole days Drunk old soldier, he give her a fright, he's a crazy lion, he's howlin' for a (fight) (Fight) uh-huh Strap hangin' gunshot sound, doors slammin' on the overground The starlings are tough but the lions are made of stone Her evenin' paper is horror-torn, there's hope for later Capricorns Lucky stars give her just enough to get her home Then she'll read about a swing to the right but she's been thinkin' about a stranger in the night I'm thinkin' 'bout the lions, thinkin' 'bout the lions What happened to the lions (tonight) (Tonight, tonight) Thinkin' 'bout the lions Thinkin' 'bout the lions
