Believe it or not, this is one of the most asked questions on leadership! Research has shown that the view is that about 1/3 are born and 2/3 are made. So, what can we take away from this to incorporate into our leadership coaching. It is impossible to consider that in certain cultures the first born, and male, is automatically expected to assume that role and responsibility. Equally, depending on the social, environmental, or family circumstances of one’s upbringing, there will be a consequential impact on the leadership skills, leadership coaching and ability of the person. Leadership coaching is something that a born leader or made leader benefits from. It is a combination of being born with a natural propensity or disposition to be a born leader, and then with leadership training and leadership coaching on and off the job, you grow to be an even better, even outstanding leader. In this way, you eliminate the various styles of personality – the extrovert and the introvert, the shy and the gregarious or loud. Each person then brings their individual skills and abilities to grow the team, company, or business. Consider leadership coaching in your leadership development and leadership skills training. With hard work and determination, you can become a successful leader. The great thing about leadership is that, like any skill, it can be learned and developed, but it still requires hard work. I am sharing these leadership coaching videos with you, not to tell you that I have all the answers to leadership, but because I have trained, developed, and grown in leadership, you can too. At the end of the day, you will create your own path and not follow mine, or anyone else’s for that matter. So, when someone says to you, or you say to someone, he/she is a “natural born leader” that could be as right, as it can be wrong! This is where the, are leaders born or made debate stems from. What if, for the sake of argument, I want to take the side of the leader who believes that he/she is natural born leader. Let us assume that you are right. Let me lay out a few questions for you to answer in your own time: What happens when you make a mistake? How do you know that you are on the right track? Are you growing as fast as you can, or you should? Has the company invested wisely in your leadership over someone else with similar skills and abilities? How do you measure your performance against other leaders? Are you a good, or an outstanding leader? I want to dwell a little on the last question, as it is crucially important. As I have said, I have led and offer leadership coaching across different countries. I can guarantee you of one thing having critically assessed my leaders and managers both in terms of benchmark performance – business and financial, and also in their leading/managing teams. In general, close to 90% of them believe they have performed well or very well against the goals they were set. They often felt hurt, or disappointed that I did not share their self-analysis! My point is that we are the worst judges (and least critical) of our performances, so how could we possibly objectively mark ourselves on our leadership skills and performance? This then brings me back to the fact that even if you are born leader or a natural born leader, you still need to grow and develop. Consider adding these things to your leadership coaching regime: Methodical Personal Coaching Mentorship Conferences Training (physical and virtual) Reading leadership books Don’t get me wrong, not everyone is leadership material, but there has to be some innate leadership skills or leadership traits added to a strong desire that means that one might be born with the ability to lead.
