STORYLINE: Thousands of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank crossed the Qalandiya checkpoint as they headed towards Jerusalem on the second Friday for Ramadan prayers. Qalandiya checkpoint is the largest crossing that lies between Jerusalem and Ramallah. Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, the Israeli government blocked Palestinians in the West Bank from visiting Israel. The Israeli authority imposed restrictions on Palestinians heading to Jerusalem and permitted only men over 55, women over 50, and children under 10 to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque this Ramadan. Asma Salawdeh arrived at Qalandiya checkpoint with her friends from Nablus to go to Al-Aqsa Mosque for Friday prayers, but said she was prevented from crossing by the Israeli army. "They prevented us from crossing, claiming that we are under the age of fifty and must have a permit and an electronic card," said Salawdeh. "We have identification cards and electronic cards, but we do not have a permit...I went to the Civil Affairs Office on Sunday to obtain a permit for Friday prayer, but they informed me that there is no prayer permit for those under the age of fifty." Palestinians who couldn’t cross into Jerusalem were seen holding Friday prayers outside Qalandiya checkpoint. "The occupation, which claims to uphold humanity and freedom of worship, is making false and incorrect claims. I was denied entry to pray and worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday," said Salem Qatash, from Ramallah.
