The modern single-hand watches featured in this video are by MeisterSinger. Most watches we see today have 3 hands, or at least 2. These help indicate, (1) the hours, (2) the minutes, and thirdly, the individual seconds. However, back in the early 16th century, when pocket watches where first introduced, time was told using just one hand. This video will explain how to read a single-hand watch and I will share my general thoughts of a modern timepiece with this minimalist approach. To begin, it’s very simple reading a single-hand watch; the 12 hour dial is broken down into 144 marks and each represent 5 minutes. The combination of a prominent needle reaching out towards the edge of the dial and, the use of bold markers indicating 15, 30, and 45-minutes respectively help make the time easy to read. The advantages of a single-hand watch are mainly aesthetic reasons as some believe it to be more visually pleasing to have a more minimalist dial and one that is clutter-free. A key disadvantage of this minimalist approach is accuracy. Upon a quick glance, you could be off by several minutes. In conclusion, I find modern single-hand watches, very much an example of ‘style over function’; however, as all of us most likely carry a smartphone and have access to the exact time, I don’t quite mind this minimalist approach to modern watchmaking. Ever since modern advancements in technology, the functions of a mechanical watch have become much less about accuracy and much more about style and visual appeal. In fact, many would argue that technology has rendered the functions of a mechanical watch obsolete. For this reason, I find single-hand watches rather beautiful and elegant because they don’t take themselves too seriously.
