Gaylord was born on May 21, 1947, in Bremerton, Washington. He grew up in Yakima where he graduated from West Valley High School and Yakima Valley Community College. In 1967 he fulfilled a dream and joined the newly created Peace Corps. He spent 4 years teaching English as a second language (ESL) in Sefrou, Morocco. Gaylord then returned to the states to finish his education, earning a BA in Anthropology from the University of Washington and his Master’s degree in Education from S.I.T. in Brattleboro, Vermont. Diplomas in hand, Gaylord then followed his true passion and spent the next many years at the Galang refugee camp in Indonesia and the Bataan camp in the Philippines, training teachers in ESL who would then teach English to Vietnamese refugees. Next came a return to the US and an ESL position at Seattle Central University for several years but the urge to work overseas continued. This time found him traveling to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he taught English as a foreign language for 9 years. The many years working overseas gave him the opportunity to travel the world, from Nepal to Ethiopia and countless countries between. In 2004 he began what would be his final teaching opportunity as an ESL teacher at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. YAKIMAHERALD.COM June 2, 2015
