Alan Shorter - flugelhorn Gato Barbieri - tenor sax Reggie Johnson - bass Rashied Ali - drums Recorded September 23rd 1968 at A&R Recording, New York City. Definitely not your typical free jazz blowing session: Shorter, brother of Wayne, favours long, winding, repeating compositional material that only gradually gave way to solo improvising. This is very much group music, less about displaying technical prowess, more about creating a particular atmosphere and contributing to it throughout. Some critics have compared the album to Ornette Coleman's early work, mainly due to the absence of piano, but it possesses a slowed-down, spaced-out and sinister vibe that is very much unique to Shorter, and very different from Ornette's more ebullient approach. Listen out for a typically wild and woolly Gato Barbieri solo (this when he was in his free jazz phase) - Barbieri generates a kind of intensity few could match (though British tenorman Gary Windo has a go on the title cut of Shorter's only other album as a leader, 'Tes Esat').
