NYCHA is home to 1 in 17 New Yorkers, providing affordable housing to more than 500,000 authorized residents. If NYCHA were a city, it would rank 35th in population size in the United States and would be larger than Sacramento, Atlanta, and Miami. Across the US, public housing has largely disappeared. Chicago knocked down Cabrini-Green in 2011, St. Louis demolished Pruitt-Igoe in 1976 and New Orleans flattened Lafitte after Katrina.
