(12 Sep 1997) Natural Sound Philippine President Fidel Ramos paid his respects at Russia's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier next to the Kremlin on Friday. Ramos is in Moscow on a three-day visit to discuss bilateral relations as well as interaction between Russian and the Association of South East Asian Nations. He'll meet Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin later in the day at the White House. It is the first time Philippine President Fidel Ramos has visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin -- paying his respect on a cloudy, damp Friday morning in Moscow. This is also the first visit of the leader of an ASEAN member state to Russia since the collapse of the former Soviet Union. The focus of the two-day visit will be bilateral trade relations between Russia and the Philippines. Trade between the two countries stood at 400 (m) million U-S dollars last year. Russia is exporting steel, metal-works and fertilisers to the Philippines and recently has offered to help with modernising the armed forces and supply Manila with MiG-29 fighter planes. On Thursday in Moscow, Ramos' visited the Institute of International Relations where he was awarded an honorary doctorate and spoke to Russia's future diplomats. During his speech Ramos stressed his hope that Russia and ASEAN would increase their already good ties, and integrate his country into the global economy. Ramos will meet with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin on Friday to top off his visit.
