In June, tensions between Israel and Iran escalated into full-blown conflict amid growing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In recent months, Iran has accelerated its uranium enrichment program, resulting in heightened scrutiny from the International Atomic Energy Agency and renewed fear from Israeli officials. Against this backdrop, Dr. Michael Koplow, Chief Policy Officer at the Israel Policy Forum, reflects on Israel’s strategic vulnerability. Dr. Koplow claims its small size raises concern in the Israeli population as they believe that just a few well-placed strikes could devastate the nation. This sense of existential threat comes from Iran’s ideological stance, which opposes Israel and the West at the core of its foreign policy. Koplow suggests that Iran likely seeks nuclear weapons not to use them directly, but to shield its other aggressive behaviors, such as ballistic missile development and support for proxy militias across the region. Israelis understandably fear worst-case scenarios. Although he personally doubts Iran would initiate a nuclear strike, given Israel's second-strike capability and inevitable U.S. involvement, he acknowledges that the Israeli public, scarred by history and geopolitical isolation, sees the risk differently. #IsraelPolitics #Iran #Nuclear #USIran #NuclearSecurity #MiddleEastSecurity #BenjaminNetanyahu #Netanyahu #Network2020 #MichaelKoplow #IsraelPolicyForum #VBS #VirtualBriefingSeries
