Altea: Further down the coast from Calpe is this lovely hillside town. Its old town, set on a hillside about 500 metres from the sea, has attracted artists, musicians and writers since the 1950s. It's a charismatic town where white houses wind down the hillside in steep, narrow streets. There are artists' studios, quirky shops and boutiques, well worth exploring. Altea is famous for its beautiful white church with a vivid blue and white mosaic domed roof, definitely worthy of a photo or two. Down at the palm fringed seafront, are more modern developments and where, every Tuesday, a massive market is set out along the promenade. Altea has an exceptionally mild climate, enjoying sunshine for 320 days per year. So, there are enough warm, sunny days to make the most of Altea's beaches. 8 beaches make up Altea's coastline, from Platja del Mascarat in the north to Cap Blanch in the south. Cap Blanch has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean sands and water and its excellent facilities. You can try windsurfing and sailing or just enjoy soaking up some rays on the soft sand. Another Blue Flag beach can be found at La Roda, which has sailing and diving centres and many shops and restaurants lining its seafront. This beach has been especially adapted to enable wheelchair users to make full use of its facilities. For real seclusion, La Solsida is an isolated beach, only reachable on foot along a rocky path, it is considered suitable for naturists.
