Handheld near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) units were integrated with novel sampling and optics in order to develop quantitative predictions of cannabinoids and terpenes. Mobile phone compatible microscope attachments were integrated with image analysis work flows towards rapid trichome size, density, and maturity estimates. Microfluidic flow cell approaches were also designed for determination of ploidy across diploid, triploid, and tetraploid plants. Progress has included: 1) high NIRS prediction values (R2 CV from 0.91 to 0.99) for THC and CBD, 2) semi-automated trichome image classifier and quantification methods development, and 3) confirmed discrimination of diploid versus tetraploid plants via microfluidic flow cell electrophoresis of fluorescently labeled nuclei.
