At a very basic level, there are three ways in which the brain functions, namely: 1. The Brain Stem: The brainstem is responsible for things like the desire to reproduce, the desire to breathe and the desire to eat. It’s essentially our survival instincts. It’s nigh-enough impossible to turn off. 2. The Limbic Brain: The limbic part of the brain is really responsible for our emotions and memories. Be it a passion, a curiousity or a love for something, the limbic is the part that spurs us to do things. This is exactly why the limbic is so essential when it comes to learning. If we can tap into the limbic part of the brain, then we can create a desire to learn. 3. The Neocortex The neocortex is the thinking part of the brain. It rationalises why we need to do certain things. It rationalises the need to study information security, it rationalises the need to study health and safety etc. The issue with trying to appeal to the neocortex is that it’s inundated with things we have to do! This is why appealing to the limbic brain is so important: the desire to learn comes from a passion, rather than a necessity. Music: Royalty Free Music from Bensound. www.growthengineering.co.uk
