A solid mass of indigestible material that forms usually in the stomach, sometimes in the small intestine or, rarely in the large intestine (fecalith). They sometimes cause a blockage. The one found in the esophagus is common in young children. A pseudobezoar is an indigestible object introduced intentionally into the digestive system. Types: • Food bolus: Loose aggregate of food items such as seeds, fruit pith, or soil. • Lactobezoar: Inspissated milk. It is most commonly seen in premature infants receiving formula foods. • Pharmacobezoar: Mostly tablet or semiliquid mass of drugs, normally found following overdose of sustained-release medications. • Phytobezoar: Indigestible plant material (e.g. cellulose). Frequently reported in patients with impaired digestion and decreased gastric motility. • Diospyrobezoar: A type of phytobezoar formed from unripe persimmons. Coca-Cola has been used to treat them. • Trichobezoar: Hair, an extreme form of hairball. Found in people who frequently ingest hair. Rapunzel syndrome.
