Chief Uruwarige Wanniyalatto has expressed his greatest fear that the Vedda way of life may not survive, as their livelihoods have been completely changed and they now rely on earning money to sustain themselves. The Veddas are a direct line of descent from the island's original Neolithic community dating back to at least 18,000 BC. Originally, they were hunter-gatherers, with women staying at home to take care of the family, while men used bows and arrows to hunt game and gather wild plants and honey. However, they are now being forced to do farming. Their original dwellings were caves and rock shelters, where elaborate cave paintings have been discovered, mainly painted by women waiting for their men to return from the hunt. Visiting the Veddas in their village provides a unique opportunity to experience their culture, relatively untouched by modern technology and commercialization. They are committed to preserving their traditions and guests can meet with the Chief of the Veddas, Uruwarige Wanniyalatto. However, visitors cannot participate in communal activities without his permission. They can observe Vedda culture closely and participate in some of their activities, such as the famous "Kiri Koraha" dance, which is a traditional form of invoking the blessings of the gods. Hunting remains their primary activity.
