Railfanning Joliet and West Chicago, IL, on 07/03/2025

In search of a new spot, me and my friends decided to head down to Joliet and railfan at the now-defunct Union Station, where the BNSF Chillicothe and CN Joliet subdivisions cross over Metra's Heritage Corridor. Upon arriving, we were met with the sight of a westbound manifest crossing the diamond, making us hopeful that the Chillicothe Sub would give us an endless stream of intermodal traffic. Unfortunately, only one freight would end up passing through during the three hours that we stayed in Joliet, with the remaining five being passenger trains; the only thing of note that we would catch would be my first heritage unit in over a year - METX 425, the Rock Island unit. Disappointed, we decided to pack it in and leave, only to immediately see a westbound z-train crossing the diamond. Now feeling defeated, we decided to head to West Chicago to see if the action was any better. Although we did end up catching a further twelve trains, the 90 degree heat, along with a complete lack of CN traffic, caused us to end this rather lackluster day with a total of eighteen trains: one BNSF, nine Metra, two Amtrak, and six UP. Highlights of the day included 425 in Joliet and a local with two ex-MP GP38Ns in West Chicago. Enjoy!
