How to Network with People

Let's figure out how to network with people in this week’s episode of MasterTalk. Follow me on Instagram: @masteryourtalk 1. Try and find events in your city that you can volunteer for to get you warmed up (0:44). You know what the beauty of volunteering is? You can talk to every other volunteer and here’s the awesome part about that, I have yet to mean rude volunteers, think about it, if you give up your time for free just to help out, when you can literally do anything else with that time, you’re probably a good person and friendly. That’s why, I LOVE volunteering for events, rather than attending them so I can meet every other volunteer and build strong relationships with them. It’s counterintuitive, but it removes all the stress because at the very least, you know the people you are talking to are just kind-hearted folks and it’ll get you excited as you begin to see the value of networking and just talking to other people. I generally only do cocktails or more formal events, if I have a specific networking goal in mind, e.g. need to meet this specific person to sell him on giving a workshop, but generally speaking, I believe, especially in our connected age, networking with anyone who takes the time to come out to events like this, are in some sense, worth talking to provided you’re interested in the event you’re attending, but I totally agree that it can be super intimidating to just approach random people and strike up conversations, it’s still a challenge for even me today, so don’t stress about it. I’ve also booked many MasterTalk workshops just volunteering for events since I meet the organizers of the event in a very informal way, so definitely worth a try since those organizers know who’s important in that room I could meet informally at a future time through their own introduction. This is how to network with people. 2. Use your unique knowledge to add value to others at the event by listening to their needs (2:23) I’ve always believed that the core of networking lies in adding so much value to other people that they HAVE to at the minimum, like you. In that regard, whenever I talk to people the first time, I always ask them what they are up to and genuinely figure out ways to help them. The most common way I do this is by sending them videos related to their subject that I believe they’ll find interesting. So, let’s say someone is talking about startups, but isn’t sure how to fundraise. I would immediately go, oh I have this great resource you need to check out, add me on Linkedin or send me your email and I’ll forward to it to you. Add value immediately, and through that, people will appreciate you, find you interesting and the second they start taking an interest in your life and what you’re up to, you’re starting to get the hang of the networking thing. On the other hand, if you spend the entire conversation just adding value and they say nothing in return to help you out, probably not someone you should prioritize keeping around. The reason I have a good network is not because I’m this vanilla person that everyone loves, it’s just because I do this value add exercise a lot more than most since I just go to more events. Let’s take MasterTalk. Let’s say I add incredible value, like bring you resources you never heard of, but you’re not even willing to do something simple like share a video or help me in any kind of way, let’s say – I’ll immediately turn from I need to add value to this person is selfish, I need to move on to the next person, so it’s important in these settings to seek those who want to add value as much as you do. This is how to network with people. 3. Relationship building is not a sprint, but rather a marathon of sprints (4:18). So many people from the guy who made my logo for free to the person who helped me with photos to the people who coached me on my current job in consulting all offered to do it for free and most of them did it for free. Why would they waste SO MUCH of their time doing that for me? Point being, if you add value, people will seek you out and introduce you to other value add people in their own lives and you’ll get even more influential because of it. This is how to network with people.
