Director's Statement: With the Ontario provincial election being called and a Canadian federal election on the horizon, I want to share my film “Disposable: Life on ODSP.” The film features interviews with three recipients of the Ontario Disability Support Program, as they recount their daily struggles of living in poverty and the advocacy they have been pushed into as recipients of the program. I recommend that while you watch it, you keep an open mind and heart. It is by no means an all-encompassing documentary, but I hope it serves as a good starting point in educating people on the issue of disability poverty and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). The issues discussed in this film are not just provincial issues, they are also federal (MAiD and the Canada Disability Benefit). This film/campaign isn’t an endorsement of any political party but rather a critique of our current governments and an ask for change. We need to elect representatives who listen to their constituents and who make it a priority to fight for the people on the margins. A government that neglects the most vulnerable will eventually neglect all of us if it no longer suits them - unless we push back and speak out. Think when you vote. Have disabled people at the front of your mind when you cast your ballot. But also go a step further. Talk to the people around you about social assistance rates and MAiD. Talk to your representatives about supporting the Canada Disability Benefit and raising social assistance rates. We live in a democracy. Our voices matter but we need to use them to be heard. Inaction is complicity and no amount of “fiscal responsibility” is worth a single human life. Emily Pot
