A trip from Ullapool to Lochinver was always going to be special. The route features stunning scenery combined with a healthy dose of historical treats! The lifeline route is operated by Rapsons Highland who are based in Tain. The route of 36 miles is a feast of mountains, rivers, lochs, castles and stags. Along the way we pass some striking mountains. Stac Pollaidh, Suilven and Quinag. Quinag is an anglicisation of its Gaelic name, A’ Chuinneag (meaning the milk pail). It’s not a single mountain but a dramatic range of 3 peaks.These are three of Scotland’s most northern Corbetts (hills over 2,500ft). At Elphin, the brown heather is replaced by an oasis of green grass. To the west, the iconic pillar of Suilven is silhouetted against the sky. The green vegetation is thanks to an underlying outcrop of limestone, which fertilises the soil and allows grass to grow where elsewhere only heather prevails. Come along and see how it goes.
