How to Shoot Day For Night | Cinematic Lighting 101

Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! Having to alter the time of day within a scene is a situation all cinematographers will find themselves in eventually. Whether it’s creating daylight in the middle of the night, or having to take away light to sell a nighttime look. There are many different ways of accomplishing this, and it’s often up to the filmmaker’s creativity. To shoot day for night, meaning a nighttime scene shot during the day, the main concern is blocking out sunlight. But when you need to block sunlight while still adding light through a window, the setup can be challenging. Today, director of photography Seannie Bryan walks us through how to shoot a holiday party scene day for night, using black-out techniques and lighting gags to sell the environment. In this video, Seannie shows us the steps she takes when shooting a holiday party scene day for night. First, she shoots a wide shot to get a sense of the location and the lighting sources. She changes the blocking of the characters in order to make the lighting look more dynamic. Next, she pushes in on the wide shot for a close-up on the first character. This shot shows more of that character’s reaction and the camera angle helps make the lighting stand out. Lastly, she flips the camera around for a reverse angle on the second character to see her reaction. This ties the scene together and allows for easy editing. The main techniques we will be discussing today are knowing the capabilities of your lights, changing blocking to serve lighting, taking lights away from a scene. Knowing the capabilities of your lights refers to any special features that the lights have that might make your scene more interesting. In this case the lights used had a fireworks effect built in that allowed for a practical lighting gag that gives the party scene more believability. Changing blocking to serve lighting means moving the placement of your characters so that the light hits them the best way. In this scene the actors were moved away from typical bathroom blocking and staged in a more comfortable position. Taking lights away from a scene is a technique that is an easy way to change the feeling of a scene. In this case, when the key light was turned off the characters were largely in silhouette, creating a more moody feeling to the scene. Ultimately, as the cinematographer you need to be able to do whatever it takes to be able to get the shot whenever you can. Sometimes that means having to fake a different time of day for a shot. The best way to do this is determining what helps make the shot work for the story. If you need complete darkness for the scene, then covering up every window is the best thing to do. If you need some light coming through the windows, then you have to get creative with light placement and black-out material. Just remember that it is the script and feeling of the scene that should influence every lighting decision.
