One day in Bonn!🇩🇪 Bonn is a federal city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the banks of the Rhine. It has a population of over 300,000. About 24 km (15 mi) south-southeast of Cologne, Bonn is in the southernmost part of the Rhine-Ruhr region, Germany's largest metropolitan area, with over 11 million inhabitants. It is a university city, was the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990. Bonn was the seat of government of reunited Germany from 1990 to 1999. What to see in one day in Bonn? •Bonn Minster (German: Bonner Münster) is a Roman Catholic church in Bonn. It is one of Germany's oldest churches, having been built between the 11th and 13th centuries. At one point the church served as the de facto cathedral for the Archbishopric of Cologne, because it is the major church of what was then the Archbishop-Elector's residence. •Münsterplatz is a square in the center of Bonn. It is northwest of the Bonn Minster and can be reached from the main train station via Poststrasse. Alongside Friedensplatz and Bonn's market square, it is one of the three large squares in Bonn's pedestrian zone. Martinsplatz adjoins the Münsterplatz to the south. The Münsterplatz is the venue for several festivals and events such as the Bonn Christmas market. •The Beethoven House (German: Beethoven-Haus) in Bonn, Germany, is a memorial site, museum, and cultural institution serving various purposes. Founded in 1889 by the Beethoven-Haus association, it studies the life and work of composer Ludwig van Beethoven. •The original Sterntor in Bonn was built around 1244 at the end of Sternstraße and was part of the medieval city fortifications. •The Namen-Jesu-Kirche (Name of Jesus Church) in Bonngasse, built from 1668 until 1717, is an important work of the so-called Jesuit Gothic style. This building style uses forms of the past. In particular the mixture of various style elements makes the church an unusual place of interest. •The Alte Rathaus at Bonner Marktplatz was built between 1737 and 1738 in the Rococo style by the electoral court architect Michael Leveilly; however, it was not completely finished until around 1780. The four-storey building has seven window axes and a gambrel with dormers. It stands as a Baudenkmal under Cultural heritage management. •The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn (German: Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) is a public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in its present form as the Rhein-Universität (English: Rhine University) on 18 October 1818 by Frederick William III, as the linear successor of the Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn (English: Academy of the Prince-elector of Cologne) which was founded in 1777. The University of Bonn offers many undergraduate and graduate programs in a range of subjects and has 544 professors. •The Church of the Cross is the largest Protestant Church in Bonn. It has plenty of room, enough to accommodate 1,200 people and serves double functions. •The Poppelsdorfer Allee is a boulevard in Bonn. Originally, it connected the Electoral Palace with the Poppelsdorf Palace over a length of exactly one kilometer. Today, the inner-city end is separated by the railway tracks of the Linke Rheinstrecke as Kaiserplatz, the remaining piece is 800 meters long. The street is mostly built up with Gründerzeit houses and horse chestnut trees. •Poppelsdorf Palace (German: Poppelsdorfer Schloss) is a Baroque building in the Poppelsdorf district of Bonn, western Germany, which is now part of the University of Bonn. •Schloss Drachenburg or Drachenburg Castle is a private villa styled as a palace and constructed in the late 19th century. It was completed in only two years (1882–84) on the Drachenfels hill in Königswinter, a German town on the east bank of the Rhine, south of the city of Bonn.
