The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab in the United States may have discovered an unknown force that influences the behavior of muons, elementary particles that spin like tops. In 2021, an international team of scientists reported measurement results that deviate from the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics. At Fermilab, muons are studied at temperatures of -230°C (−382°F), colder than Neptune. After initial criticism, the experiments were repeated, and the measurement accuracy was doubled, reducing uncertainties to a value of 1 in 5 million. Researchers from TU Dresden have played a key role in calculations that allow for insights into the properties of possible new particles. By 2025, Fermilab plans to evaluate all six measurement years, and theoretical physicists worldwide are working to refine the Standard Model. It remains open whether the anomalies can be explained by known particles, or if they point to new particles or a new fundamental force of nature. The researchers are convinced that this evaluation could open the door to exciting new areas of science.
