Bilkis Bano case resumes August 7: SC | Supreme Court Verdict | Gujarat High Court | Modi Government

On the 17th of July, the Supreme Court announced that starting from August 7th, it will hear the final pleas challenging the release of the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano Case. According to The Hindu, a Bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan confirmed that the service of notices to the various released convicts and other parties has been completed. This has been an ongoing case since August 15, 2022, when the Gujarat government released 11 people who were convicted of gang-raping Bilkis Bano and killing her entire family, including her 3-year-old daughter, during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan further confirmed that all the proceedings are completed, and the notices have been served to the concerned parties through newspaper publication or directly. ""We hold that pleadings in the matter are complete, and all the respondents have been served notices in all the cases through newspaper publications or directly. We list the matter for final hearing on August 7. All parties should file short written submissions, synopsis, and a list of dates relevant to the case before the final hearing. Additionally, the court has advised that both parties stick to the main issue while presenting their arguments. It has also granted a 3-week time period for both parties to submit their replies. Bilkis Bano contested the release of the 11 convicts who were released prematurely by the Gujarat government. In 2002, Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat. She also lost seven members of her family during this incident. In the year 2021, there was a rise in rape cases in India, as reported by the National Crime Report data. In most of the cases, the perpetrators were known to the victims.
