Finding Care for Adult Congenital Heart Disease: Don’s Story

Don was born with congenital aortic stenosis, a congenital heart defect (CHD) in which a narrowed aortic valve causes obstruction of blood flow. From his first day of life, he saw cardiology experts on the Anschutz Medical Campus, who monitored and treated his heart condition. But it wasn’t until 2018 when he was diagnosed with an aneurism in his ascending aorta that he realized the importance of seeking a higher level of care with experts who treat adults with congenital heart disease. He found those experts at the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Here, our nationally ranked Heart Institute provides lifelong care for patients with congenital heart defects. We’re changing the future of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and improving quality of life for all patients living with CHD, no matter their age. Thanks to remarkable advancements in care for congenital heart defects (CHD), the majority of babies born with even the most complex heart disease are surviving into adulthood. Fortunately, more and more children with CHD are growing up to lead full, active lives as adults – just like Don. With the ACHD experts monitoring Don’s condition, he feels comfortable and safe living his life and doing all the activities he loves the most.
