Today, we are all saddened with the loss of a great Cape Verdean musician and music instrument maker. Ivo Pires passed away on March 21, 2009 in Boston. Ivo Pires was born in Brava in the village of Fraguesia, Nossa Senhora Do Monte. This was the place he loved and where he taught himself how to play the violin. Mr. Pires was just a child when he first realized that he wanted to be a musician. He once said in an interview I use to see musicians walking in the street with their instruments slung over their backs and I always admired how the instruments were shaped, the sound of them, and everything about them. When Ivo Pires was eight years old he saw some of these same musicians and got so excited that the minute they left his site, he ran to his grandmothers house and pulled the cedar shingle from the wall. He said I wanted to make an instrument so bad and I had no knife, so I took a 4 inch nail and pounded it flat He then said I put it between two pieces of wood and wrapped it with string for a handle. He used the handmade knife and the shingle to carve out the shape of the instrument he saw. At the age of nine he made his first ukulele.
