A single moth can invade packages and lay up to 300 eggs, creating widespread infestations that will ruin foods and render them inedible. Adult Angoumois grain moths are small, like other pantry moths, with a wingspan of about 16 millimeters. They are yellowish-white with pale yellow forewings. The larvae, when fully grown, are about 3 millimeters long. They have white bodies with yellow-brown heads. If your home has become infested with pantry pests, you likely brought in a package from the store that was already infested. Angoumois grain moths infest a variety of stored products, but they prefer grains including corn, wheat, beans, and rice. After hatching, the larvae burrow into grains and develop within. After pupating into adult moths, they create distinct, round exit holes in the grain as they make their way out. When looking for Angoumois grain moths, check your foods for these exit holes and for any moths themselves. When larvae have infested food, the food may become discolored. The larvae will also release strong, foul odors. Angoumois grain moths don’t live long as adults, so note any flying activity, as these pests are likely flying closer to breeding and egg-laying sites. To treat an Angoumois grain moth infestation, the first step is to clean out your pantry. Start by throwing out boxed and bagged foodstuffs. That sounds extreme, but if you’ve found at least one infested package, odds are there are moths and larvae in your other packaged foods. Set aside everything else from the pantry, then vacuum all cracks and crevices in the pantry’s shelving. Small pantry pests may be found in these tight spaces as they travel from product to product. Be sure to throw out the vacuum’s contents outdoors when you’re done. Wipe down the pantry shelves with water to clean up any food residue. Do not use any strong detergents or bleach, as these will keep pests away from the pesticides you’ll apply. Once the pantry shelves are clean, create long-lasting control with Novacide Aerosol.
