In the world of wine, nothing is quite as venerable as an old vine. As living pieces of agricultural history, deep-rooted vines 50 years of age or older produce perfectly ripe, concentrated grapes. With minimal intervention, this makes for elegant wines with a distinct sense of place of the vineyard. But old vines and the remarkable wines they produce are in danger. Watch our virtual tasting and grower and winemaker panel discussion surrounding Lodi’s old vine vineyards and wines and those attributes which contribute to their uniqueness plus why both are in danger. Moderated by Stuart Spencer of the Lodi Winegrape Commission and St.Amant Winery, panelists include Kevin Phillips of Michael David Winery and Phillips Farms, Tegan Passalacqua of Turley Wine Cellars and Sandlands, and Jeff Perlegos, Lodi grower and owner of Stampede and Cherryhouse Vineyards. Wines discussed include: McCay Cellars 2016 TruLux Vineyard (planted 1940s) Zinfandel, SRP $35 Klinker Brick Winery 2017 Rauser Vineyard (planted 1909) Carignane, SRP $25 Maître de Chai 2018 Stampede Vineyard (planted 1928) Zinfandel, SRP $33 m2 Wines 2017 Soucie Vineyard (planted 1916) Zinfandel, SPR $32 Michael David Winery 2018 Bechthold Vineyard (planted 1886) Cinsaut, SRP $25 Turley Wine Cellars 2018 Kirschenmann Vineyard (planted 1915) Zinfandel, SRP $32 Learn more at www.savetheold.com.
