The Relegalizing Industrial Hemp Project consists of filing an official formal administrative rulemaking petition with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to force the agency to change its rules so industrial hemp is no longer, as a matter of law, classified as marihuana. As a matter of fact, industrial hemp and marijuana are distant cousins in the Cannabis genus, and are distinguishable. Most industrial democracies and 27 (and counting) U.S. states have distinguished industrial hemp from marijuana and have removed barriers to production or fully legalized production. While the U.S. imports more industrial hemp products than any other country in the world, it is generally illegal to grow in the U.S. In 2014, the U.S. Congress authorized industrial hemp cultivation in states that have legalized industrial hemp for research purposes in plots authorized by a state or academic institution. However, until industrial hemp is free to grow in any state and without limitation, the environmental, economic, public health and social benefits of industrial hemp cultivation and manufacture will not be realized. This project will provide positive change in public policy for ours and future generations If DEA rejects the petition, we’ll see them in federal court.
