(31 Aug 1997) T/I: 10:33:59 Britain's Prince William, second in line to the throne, and his younger brother Prince Harry, were told of the death of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, by Prince Charles in the early hours of Sunday morning (31/8) at the royal Balmoral estate in Scotland. The Archbishop of Canterbury commented on the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Princess Diana. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales were "deeply shocked and distressed by this terrible news." UK Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed his saddness and shock at the death of Diana. Thousands of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace and Diana's Kensington Palace residence to pay their last repeccts to one of the most loved and controversial members of the Royal family. Late in the morning members of the royal family left their summer residence in Balmoral, Scotland, to attend a local church. They left the residence in three vehicles - the Queen Mother and Prince Andrew in the first, Prince Charles and his sons in the second, and Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh in the third.
