Heavy fighting leaves much of Volnovakha in ruins

(12 Mar 2022) Much of the eastern Ukrainian town of Volnovakha lay in ruins on Friday after heavy fighting between Ukrainian troops and separatist forces supported by Russia. Residential buildings and streets were destroyed by artillery fire as separatist forces captured the town. Irina, a local resident, said street battles erupted around her building, forcing her to flee to a basement for shelter, but she wasn't able to evacuate her bedridden mother in time. She said her mother, who had a weak heart, died before she could be evacuated. The remaining residents of the town, which is without water and electricity, were making fires in their courtyards to warm up and to heat water.
