The huge impact that coronavirus is having on the NHS has been revealed in figures showing a huge number of people waiting more than a year for routine treatment and operations. In September almost 140,000 people had been waiting more than a year for non-urgent operations like hip and knee replacements. That compares with 16,000 people on the waiting list before the pandemic began. They are the worst figures in England for 12 years. There are fears that the situation is getting worse due to the second pandemic lockdown. Some hospitals have started to cut back non-urgent work even further.
